About the project
MAMA is an EU co-funded project that addresses gender discrimination faced by women athletes in relation to maternity. The project aims to promote a more inclusive and supportive sporting environment by raising awareness of the barriers that athlete-mothers experience and by encouraging maternity-friendly practices across the sport sector.
Through research, education, capacity building and policy-oriented work, MAMA brings together partners from across Europe to strengthen knowledge, support affected athletes and contribute to long-term change in sport organisations and communities. The project combines strategic research and analysis, development of educational materials, implementation of an e-learning capacity-building programme, and dissemination activities designed to reach a wide European audience.
Objectives
The main objectives of the MAMA project are:
- to raise awareness about discrimination and inequality related to maternity in sport
- to educate the sports community on the needs and rights of women athletes during pregnancy and motherhood
- to empower affected athletes by improving knowledge, visibility and support mechanisms
- to develop educational and training resources, including an e-learning capacity-building programme
- to identify current best practices and knowledge gaps through research, surveys and interviews
- to promote policy change and encourage the adoption of more inclusive maternity policies in sport organisations
