EOLHSS: European Observatory on LGBTIQ+ Hate Speech in Sport

EOLHSS is an Erasmus+ Sport cooperation project aimed at addressing hate speech and discrimination against LGBTIQ+ individuals in the sporting environment. The project seeks to raise awareness about the presence and impact of hate speech in sport and to contribute to the development of more inclusive and respectful grassroots sport cultures across Europe.

About the Project

Sport has the power to bring people together, yet discrimination and hate speech remain significant barriers for many LGBTIQ+ athletes and participants. EOLHSS aims to better understand these challenges by collecting and analysing data on hate speech in sport, reviewing existing research, and documenting experiences and stories from athletes and stakeholders across the sector. These insights will help highlight the scale of the problem and support evidence-based responses.

Through research, data collection and awareness-raising activities, the project will analyse the scale and nature of hate speech affecting LGBTIQ+ athletes and participants in sport. Based on these findings, EOLHSS will develop practical tools and recommendations to support sport organisations in preventing and responding to discriminatory behaviour.

Objectives

The main objective of EOLHSS is to contribute to a safer and more inclusive sport environment by addressing hate speech and discrimination based on LGBTIQ+ identity.

The project specifically aims to:

  • Improve knowledge and understanding of LGBTIQ+ hate speech in sport through research and data analysis
  • Raise awareness of the scale and impact of hate speech affecting LGBTIQ+ athletes and participants
  • Develop practical tools and guidelines for sport organisations to prevent and respond to discrimination
  • Promote inclusive values, equality and respect within grassroots sport across Europe
